Thorn in my side......that fishing pole

A few years ago, Dave bought a fishing pole for me. At the first mention of it, I didn't really think I needed my own fishing pole. Then I was pretty excited about it. I had always just used the family fishing poles growing up, but never actually had my own fishing pole. When we got a membership to Godfrey's Pond, I was even more excited about it because fishing is so much fun there. For Dave's sake I will clarify what "fishing" is. Dave puts worm on hook. Becky casts and watches bobber. Becky catches fish. Dave takes fish off hook. Dave puts new worm on hook if needed. And repeat. See...I LOVE FISHING!!!!

Back to the fishing pole. So I get this really nice maroon fishing pole and I get ready to use it the first time and it doesn't work like the ones I am used to. I am used to the ones that you push the button to cast and then simply reel back in. This new fishing pole, I have to flip over a silver thing, hold the line with my finger and cast out. Then I have to flip it back over and reel in. After giving Dave the look about this....I learn to use this new fishing pole. This is when the trouble begins. I have a fish on the line- Yay!! Only trouble is, I also have a knot. I am winding and winding and the fish has my bobber under the water. I'm yelling, Dave's yelling. Finally, I just throw the pole down and pull it in by hand. Of course the fish has completely swallowed the hook and now I get the look.

This doesn't just happen once, it starts to happen all the time. I am convinced the pole has something wrong with it. Dave is convinced it is the person holding the pole....hmmmm does that mean me?? I think it does. This goes on for a few years. Knot after knot. It would work a few times just fine and then I would have a knot, sometimes with a fish on the end. I bet any of my family that has fished with me could agree, I did not like this fishing pole.

He finally gives in on our trip to Bass Pro near Boston to just get me a new fishing pole and it's the push button kind - YAY!!!

I tell him we should just throw that other one out!! Of course since there is "nothing wrong with it" we need to keep it. That is until the other day when we went to Godfrey's Pond with Dillon and finally he had the same trouble. I warn Dillon to be careful and that it knots up sometimes. Dave says nothing. I give him the look because it just makes me crazy that this pole has it out for me and no one believes me. Ugh. So I just take my new pole and I'm on my way. Well, Dillon is doing completely fine. The maroon thorn in my side fishing pole is working just fine for him. He's casting great, reeling in great. Catching one fish after another. Fishing is moving along just smoothly for everyone when we hear shouts across the way from Dillon.
"Hey, why isn't this thing reeling in.....I have a fish on the line and I can't get it..... ahh man....what is happening with this thing." Next thing you see is Dillon putting the maroon fishing pole down and pulling the fish in by hand. And what else does he have besides the fish....Yep a big KNOT!!! Besides that, the line has somehow managed to come out of those holes that you feed it through down the pole too. It is a tangled mess. Poor Dillon but yay for Becky!!! I knew it wasn't just me!!!

Look at Tatum's hand on Dillon's shoulder. It looks like she is consoling him :)

Well I'm glad you didn't blame the fish.
