First the primer. Don't underestimate the power of a good quality oil based primer. Also don't underestimate how difficult it is to get out of your hair, if by some chance you bump your head into the side of a freshly painted chicken coop. You know....hypothetically speaking.

All painted, just needs the shingles - that's Dave's part.

Now the fun part - picking up chicks. That's just funny to say. We have made our share of chick jokes this past weekend and does it really ever get old?
Syd: "where's dad?"
Me: "out in the garage with his chicks."
I don't care who you are - that's funny stuff.
We found a person close by that sells baby chicks. So we all piled in the car off to purchase baby chicks. We pull into the driveway of a pretty nice house and wonder....where are these chickens. That's when we see about 6 peacocks running around, chickens under trees, roosters on fencing cock-a-doodle-dooing at us. All 4 of us were just kind of looking around with our mouths open.
The nice gentleman was waiting for us and asked if we wanted to see all of of the birds. We followed him down the hill and over to the group of sheds in a fenced in area. Once we were all closed in, I realized just how many birds they had back there. Two HUGE turkeys were waddling about. There were guinea hens, all sorts of chickens, rabbits, etc - all just hanging out. Sydney and Dave were up listening to the guy point everything out. Tatum and I were back a little and turn around to find the two HUGE male turkeys following us just a little too close for our comfort. Tatum was now climbing up my leg and I'm thinking who is going to save me??? One of them looked right at me and started making the gobbling sound and we scooted up with Dave. But with all of those birds out there, not one single one came after us. They were great. Turns out that the turkeys just like to hang out with people and will follow you around for no good reason. Good to know.
Next stop, the garage. The gentleman looks at Tatum and Sydney and asks if they want to see the baby bunnies. Ok, is the sky blue? He grabbed out two and handed them each one to hold. They were so soft and cute. Syd looks up at me and I immediately say "no, no bunnies." I'm so tough!!! At this point, I'm looking around wondering where the chicks are.
He puts the bunnies back and points to a large pole barn and says that the brooder is in there.
Here is a picture of what a basic multi level one looks like, like the one he had.

The top level had chicks, the next level had ducks, and the other level had guinea hen chicks. Tatum couldn't really see so he opened the side flaps and had her stand on bags of chicken feed to see in. This worked great. Out of the front he was able to grab out the chicks while Tatum watched. We were so enthralled with the baby ducks. Syd asks the question: Can we get a baby duck? All of us ladies look up at Dave holding the box of chicks. He thinks for a moment and says "OK". So the man goes in to grab the first baby duck, forgetting all about the wide open flap that Tatum was peaking in. It was chaos. Baby ducks were leaping out like crazy. It was like an airplane with parachute jumpers. One right after another. At least there were lots of things for them to land on before they finally made it down to the barn floor. I was a bit stunned, Syd was trying to grab the falling ducks, and the man just goes "Oh dear, that's not good" in this super calm voice. We spend the next 10 minutes trying to herd baby ducklings back to him to grab and put away. I can still picture the group of about 15 running this way and then that way.
After that, we paid the man and left. Whew. What a strange place.
Back home, Dave set up a little home for them with a heat lamp and all was well.

The girls love holding them. Tatum has no fear and just reaches right in and scoops one up. She really likes the teeny tiny one that was just 2 days old when we got her (hopefully it's a her).

This one has been nicknamed Godzilla because she is so much bigger and kind of just steps wherever she feels like.

Here is a little video of them waiting in the dog carrier while Dave got their new home all set up.
